back in Cairoback in Cairo Everyone has been asking me if things feel or look any different here in Cairo after the revolution.  When I left, there were tanks in my neighborhood, a curfew, lots of gunfire, there was no internet, and Mubarak was still president.  Now, Mubarak is gone, the police are back on the streets, the tanks have rolled out,...

from ancient to medieval in Cairofrom ancient to medieval in Cairo On Tuesday we started our day with a cab ride to Tahrir to see the Egyptian Museum of Antiquities. We spent a few hours enjoying the Tutahnkamun exhibit, Akhenaten collection, and other ancient art and artifacts of Egypt. We then took a taxi to the Citadel. The views of the city were stunning. We...

weddles in luxorweddles in luxor This past week has been a whirlwind!  After seeing some sights around Cairo with Ryan, my parents arrived and we left for Luxor.  We arrived in Luxor around midday and decided to check out Luxor Temple in the afternoon sunlight.  It was incredible.  The city of Luxor creeps right up to the edges of these ancient sites,...

Mount SinaiMount Sinai Last weekend we went on a faculty trip to Mount Sinai.  After a 9 hour bus ride through barren, empty, desert, along the eastern coast of Egypt and across the Sinai Peninsula, we made it to Dahab where the best thing about our hotel was the coral reef meters from our room.  Another 2 hour bus ride through a forbidding...

Unfinished ObeliskUnfinished Obelisk Once we got to Aswan and after a crazy taxi experience that entailed some serious driver rivalry, keys stolen from the ignition, a chase involving a tire iron, and a group of tourists, ahem, us, quietly unloading our luggage and finding another cab... Trouble

Oh dear, I guess I spoke to soon.  Alie likes her space.  Marti wants nothing more than Alie’s love.  It’s a recipe for trouble.

Here Marti is watching Alie nap in peace.

trouble begins

I snapped this on the computer’s camera.  I thought I’d need to capture the beginning of their beautiful friendship and that I might miss my chance if ran to get the camera.

Marti just sat there for a minute before I decided to give her some help.  Alie woke up.  She wasn’t hissing.  It looked promising.  Can you blame me?

so far so good

Hey, wow, they are tolerating each other!  This is great!  Wait a second.  Check out that look on Alie’s face.

wait for it

Yeah, that look is not going anywhere.

the clash

It happened so quickly.  Poor Marti.

the victor

Oh well, I guess we will just chalk it up to progress and hope it keeps getting better.  In the mean time, I have to remind myself that they were once like this:

CATS

Awwww.

Oh Alie. Be kind. Share the sunshine on your pillow.

Seriously!

Your blog is BEAUTIFUL, Emily! I’m enjoying your adventures in feline re-introduction. They’ll be grooming each other again in no time I’m sure! Xo, SH

Thanks, Sarah! Maybe if they know they have fans out there rooting for them, they’ll just go ahead and start being nice to each other. Give the people what they want, Marti and Alie!!!

Hi, Emily! Thanks for your card. I was in DC last week and met with Wendy Clark at the National Endowment of the Arts. For some reason our conversation took a turn toward writing and she mentioned a writer friend who has just moved to Cairo. I sent her your blog and here is the link to her friend’s blog. She has published a previous book and might be a good contact for you! All best — Deborah
