back in Cairoback in Cairo Everyone has been asking me if things feel or look any different here in Cairo after the revolution.  When I left, there were tanks in my neighborhood, a curfew, lots of gunfire, there was no internet, and Mubarak was still president.  Now, Mubarak is gone, the police are back on the streets, the tanks have rolled out,...

from ancient to medieval in Cairofrom ancient to medieval in Cairo On Tuesday we started our day with a cab ride to Tahrir to see the Egyptian Museum of Antiquities. We spent a few hours enjoying the Tutahnkamun exhibit, Akhenaten collection, and other ancient art and artifacts of Egypt. We then took a taxi to the Citadel. The views of the city were stunning. We...

weddles in luxorweddles in luxor This past week has been a whirlwind!  After seeing some sights around Cairo with Ryan, my parents arrived and we left for Luxor.  We arrived in Luxor around midday and decided to check out Luxor Temple in the afternoon sunlight.  It was incredible.  The city of Luxor creeps right up to the edges of these ancient sites,...

Mount SinaiMount Sinai Last weekend we went on a faculty trip to Mount Sinai.  After a 9 hour bus ride through barren, empty, desert, along the eastern coast of Egypt and across the Sinai Peninsula, we made it to Dahab where the best thing about our hotel was the coral reef meters from our room.  Another 2 hour bus ride through a forbidding...

Unfinished ObeliskUnfinished Obelisk Once we got to Aswan and after a crazy taxi experience that entailed some serious driver rivalry, keys stolen from the ignition, a chase involving a tire iron, and a group of tourists, ahem, us, quietly unloading our luggage and finding another cab... (yeah, I know, OH EGYPT!) Anyhow once we got to Aswan, we decided...

Category : Cats, My Life in Cairo

Today I decided to pick up some baskets to help with my ongoing efforts to get organized and de-clutter our space, so I headed toward the Maadi Grand Mall because that’s where the basket guy’s cart is usually parked.

Here it is.

Don’t you love it?  Car, car, car, car, basket wagon, car, car, car.  I love it.

This isn’t the big basket cart, so the selection wasn’t as great, but he had a lot of nice baskets.  I got over the fact that many were dragging on the ground.  Don’t worry, he hosed them off for me.

I need to figure out a use for some of the larger ones.  I think they look really nice and I am sure I will love having them someday.

Since I was on a mission though, I just got a few.  One for keys and change to de-clutter all the spaces near our front door.

One for cat toys.  I guess this officially makes us weird, childless, cat people.  But they love their toys, and I don’t love having them scattered all over the house.

One for receipts and business cards and all the other mystery paper that is everywhere that probably just needs to be shredded or thrown out or, at the very least, collected in one place.  Like a basket.  Ha.

Unfortunately, I’d forgotten how much Alie loves to sit on paper.  It’s really weird, but she can’t resist.  It gets particularly annoying when you’re trying to turn the page on a book, but unfortunately the inconvenience doesn’t stand up very well as an excuse for not finishing reading assignments.

Anyhow, here she is in her receipt nest.

She’s a freak.  I’m sorry.  But I love her. Look at her.  Settling in for the long haul.

Oh gosh.

And last but not least, the basket man threw in a free basket of his choosing as a gift.  Everyone is so nice here.  Or maybe I overpaid.  Anyhow, he took his time in selecting the right one, and here it is.

He informed me it was for water.  I am not sure how I feel about corn-husk beverage coozies.  I’m just not sure.

Anyhow, I better get back to cleaning and organizing.

How about turning the water coozie into a pencil/pen holder or is it too tall?
First it was a goat in a coat and now a cat in a basket…you made me smile!

A basket cart! And hand-made baskets at that!!! Aren’t you the lucky lady?! I’m looking forward to seeing a photo of the “big basket cart” someday – this one is quite impressive parked in queue with the cars. Will Alie get a basket of her very own someday? What about Marti? Does she like baskets too? A big basket on its side might make a nice little “crate” for the cats to sleep in. Does the basket man make the baskets or does he just bring them to market?

Everything looks so clean and organized!!!!!! No dust in the desert!?!?!
I could use your help here!

Don’t you worry about Alie. She’s already found her basket of her own, haha. Marti hasn’t even noticed them. She’s got her sunny spot in the back bedroom and nothing else matters.

As for who makes the baskets… I have no idea. But I haven’t seen the seller making any, so maybe he just mans the cart. Maybe I will find out after I learn some functional Arabic this semester!
